Rather than blog about the history of the building  www.easternstate.org or the reports of ghost sightings, I thought it would be fun to write about Pep.

Now, you may ask yourself, what or who is Pep? Well, I’m getting to that.

I found out about Pep as I stood there with my soda in one hand and a souvenir t-shirt in the other, looking for a few books to bring back home, late one night in the gift shop at Eastern State. As I browsed around, I came to a selection of coffee cups with a dog’s photo on them.

I asked the poor soul, waiting patiently for me behind the counter to buy my items, what was the story behind the dog.

He told me that Pep was sentenced to Eastern State Penitentiary. Say what?

Eighty six years ago, on August 12, 1924, this adorable but guilty looking Labrador Retriever was assigned Inmate Number C2559.

His crime? Allegedly, he killed Governor Gifford Pinchot’s wife’s beloved cat (whew, that is a mouthful) and was sentenced to life in prison.

However, the Governor’s version differed. He claimed that Pep was sent to Eastern State to keep the inmates company and to be the prison’s mascot. Nice recover Mr. PR.

Whatever the reasoning, how can you not love this cat murdering dog’s mug shot?!

Supposedly, Pep’s ghost haunts the prison grounds. There have been reports of people hearing a dog howl and the sound of dog tags jingling.

Below are two videos of what can happen during an investigation that most paranormal investigators don’t want you to know.  The first is what happens when you are slap happy because you have had no sleep for the past 48 hours and the second is what happens when an investigator gets scares.

The Aokigahara Forest is at the base of Mount Fuji.  Not only is it a popular tourist attraction, but it is a place where some visitors go in and never come out.

This destination is ranked second for the most popular suicide location.

The first location, just in case you are morbidly curious, is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for a visitor to come across the remains of a suicide victim, in various stages of decomposition, or the remnants of yellow tape and flowers left by loved ones, letting you know this area was once a crime scene.

I don’t know who would have it worse? The poor soul who discovers the body or the forest rangers who must retrieve the body and then according to legend, sleep in the same room with the deceased!  Yes, you read it correctly, share a room with the dead!

Their belief is that the suicide victim’s ghost or “Yurei”, if left alone, will rise from the dead and roam around while screaming throughout the night!   Pretty freaky, n’est pas?

However, it’s not just the suicide victims who haunt this eerie forest.  It is haunted by hikers, who have lost their way some say due to compasses not working because of the rich, volcanic soil that contains high deposits of magnetic iron and also haunted by the victims of Ubasute.  Uba what?  Ubasute!

Ubasute was a tradition of the Japanese for centuries and now is outlawed.  The tradition consisted of a family member, who was either elderly or impaired, being brought to the forest and left to die.  Such a shame.

It is hard to believe that something so beautiful as this forest with its towering trees, caves and even a waterfall while in full view of a majestic mountain is scarred by something so ugly….death.

These brutal murders were committed by the oldest son, Robert DeFeo, Jr.  His story has changed over the years to why he murdered his family.

Stories have varied from hearing voices and demons to family abuse.  He has even said his sister (one of the victims) helped him murder his family.

A year later, the Lutz family moved into the house and they were well aware of the tragic history.

However, they only lived in the house for 28 days.  They claimed to be terrorized by demonic forces and they were so scared, they left and never returned, leaving all of their possessions behind.

In 1977, a book, “The Amityville Horror: A True Story,” was written to document their horrific experiences.

Did George and Kathy Lutz really encounter paranormal activity or was it all a hoax?  There are many theories and I’m not sure what to think.  But what I do know is a family was brutally murdered, over 35 years ago, in a small picturesque town called Amityville .  And forever, this town, will be known for that horrific crime.

I can not believe this day has arrived…my 20 year high school reunion!  I am overwhelmed with feelings of not only excitement and curiosity, but also a little of my teenage insecurities are resurfacing.

Insecurities I haven’t thought about in years except when I occasionally watch a John Hughes film (Molly Ringwald, I’ve got your back girl).

Tonight, I will see familiar faces, reminisce about the fun we used to have and hopefully, walk away with new found friends.

I’m wondering if anyone will show up with tales of inventing the Post-It Notes?  Hmmmm…..

Sorry, I digress.

I shall never look at my childhood love, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ever again.

Today, I read an interesting article claiming that jelly made from one of Princess Diana’s hair is on sale at a Surrealist art show in London. Is your gag reflex in full gear yet?

For $7.60, you can purchase this jar of jelly. Now, are you asking yourself, “how in the world can you make jelly out of hair?”

Well, according to Sam Bompas of Bompas and Parr Caterers, the jelly was made by infusing a speck of Princess Diana’s hair with gin and then combining it with sugar and milk to create a product that supposedly tastes like condensed milk.

Tastes like condensed milk? This means that someone has actually consumed Princess Diana’s DNA.

The hair was bought for $10 on eBay. It’s amazing what you can get on eBay! Make note to self, must check out eBay.

Now, the next question is “why would someone want to make jelly out of hair?” According to Bompass, “We thought about it and the most mundane food of all is jam. So we made it a surreal object.” The jelly is meant to make you think about food marketing and how language enhances the eating experience.

I’m sorry but the only thought that would be running through my head is the fact that I’m eating hair. Hair, something that I’m always trying to keep away from my mouth, not purposely putting in my mouth.

I love Princess Diana and am fascinated with her. I’ve read many stories about her, watched her televised wedding along with millions of other viewers and have walked through the halls of Kensington Palace. However, hair is hair and I think that my late night snack of a pb & j and a cold glass of milk will forever be tainted or at least until I’m hungry again.
