T’was The Night Before Krampus
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t find the darker side of such a joyous holiday as CHRISTMAS! What can I say, I gotta be me!
Did you know that in Europe, a ferocious, frightening figure named Krampus accompanied St. Nicolas on his visits to children who slept with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads?
Yes it’s true. During the Christmas season as St. Nicolas was leaving gifts for good little children, his friend, Krampus, would be punishing the children who had misbehaved.
Could you imagine waking up from your slumber to find a hairy, hoofed figure, with horns and a long tongue standing at your bed while holding a whip, ready to take you away?!
To this day, certain regions, notably Germany and Austria, still celebrate him on December 5th. Men, dressed up as Krampus, run around the streets and frighten children and women with rusty chains and bells. And I thought the St. Paul Winter Carnival Vulcans were a terror!
So, were you naughty or nice this year?
Happy Holidays!
