Christmas Drear
If you are like me, this holiday season is going by so quickly.
It seems like I haven’t had time to breath, let alone have time to Christmas shop!
So the other night on my way home, I thought that listening to some Christmas music would get me into the holiday spirit.
Just picture the scene from “Sleepless in Seattle” with Meg Ryan’s character singing along with the radio, “horses, horses, horses, horses…”.
Anyway, Do They Know It’s Christmas by Band Aid came on and as I was listening to Bono’s verse “and tonight thank God it’s them instead of you”, it dawned on me that that’s not very happy or Christmas-like! And then as I thought about another verse “and there’s a world outside your window, and it’s a world of dreaded fear….”, my brain got to thinkin’ (I know, I know, you better stand back, she’s gonna blow!). What other holiday songs are out there with lyrics that are a little disturbing?
Well my friends, here are just a few.
Happy Christmas (War Is Over). “So this is Christmas, and what have you done, another year over, and a new one just begun.” This verse kind of makes me feel like I’m a lazy ass or a loser. And then the verse, “let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear”, yes please, let’s hope we don’t have to live with any fear except for what Uncle Joe will due next year to embarrass himself after too much eggnog.
Now, just between you and me, I am a huge fan of Judy Garland songs and films. And from the movie, “Meet me in St. Louis”, she sings Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
“Someday soon we all will be together, if the Fates allow. Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow. So have yourself a merry little Christmas now”. All I have to say is can someone please hand me a tissue! She’s even teary-eyed in the movie!
And last but not least, let us not forget the ever popular 80’s song, Last Christmas by Wham.
“Last Christmas, I gave you my heart but the very next day, you gave it away. This year to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special”. All I have to say is ouch!!!
Isn’t the holiday season supposed to be magical and filled with good cheer? So why on earth would people write sad Christmas songs? Granted, it’s got a good beat that I can dance to, but C’MON!
With that said, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
With much love,
~Mallie Fox
